The Burrell’s refurbishment will upgrade the building into an energy efficient, modern museum. Two new floors of exhibition space will be created with the museum’s stores open to visitors for the first time.
Improved facilities will also include a café with access from the park at ground level, enhanced retail opportunities, and landscaped terraces linking the museum to its parkland setting.
To date, only 20% of the Burrell’s Collection has been on display in the museum. The redisplay of the Collection will provide a far richer interpretation of the artworks, greatly increasing access to the 9,000 objects within the Collection.
Through the creative use of our world-renowned Collection, the Burrell will bring the past into lively conversation with the present, helping us see the world anew through a shared cultural heritage.
Photography and video recording
Sir William Burrell left his mark on the world, both as a highly successful businessman and as an international art collector and philanthropist. His gift to the people of Glasgow cannot be underestimated. The Burrell Collection is well known not only in Britain but around the world as a fine example of how one man’s vision to benefit his community and country can be realized so successfully. As the city unveils plans for a full refurbishment and redisplay of the Burrell Collection, we have the opportunity to fully realize the collection’s potential on a global stage.
